About this course

This course is for practitioners who may need to manage a medical emergency in their dental practice. It meets requirements of the Dental Council Medical Emergencies Practice Standard for dentists, dental and oral specialists who are not performing sedation.

This training provides you with the knowledge and skills required to appropriately and effectively manage a medical emergency until an emergency response team arrives. It includes team practice for adult and child/infant collapse to ensure a coordinated and appropriate response.

This course covers:

1.Specific responses to medical emergency situations

      • Anaphylaxis
      • Acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina and myocardial infarction)
      • Asthma
      • Diabetic emergency
      • Epileptic seizure
      • Faint (syncope)
      • Hypo/Hyperglycaemia
      • Hyperventilation (anxiety associated)
      • Maternal collapse

      2. Management of adult collapse

      3. Management of child or infant collapse

      4. Adult and Child resuscitation, including the technique of bag-to-mask ventilation (one and two person)

      5. AED defibrillation

      6. Management of airway obstruction and breathing

      • Management of choking and aspiration
      • Manual airway opening, with head tilt, chin lift and jaw thrust
      • Oropharyngeal airway suctioning
      • Insertion of an oropharyngeal airway
      • The safe delivery of oxygen from an oxygen cylinder.
